A nutritional therapist’s aim is to help you to live a longer, healthier and happier life. We do this by discovering and addressing the underlying causes of your aches, pains and health issues. We then work with you to establish a life long approach to diet and lifestyle that works for you.
Nutrition and lifestyle impact our health and mental wellbeing significantly more than most people think. We all know we shouldn’t reach for chocolate or alcohol if we are feeling low or stressed, but sometimes it is just so difficult not to do it. This has never been so true than during the last year of pandemic. The number of people with excess weight has been steadily rising.
An NHS report in 2020 found that 67% of men and 60% of women in the UK were obese. This has a big impact on health.
The Role of a Nutritional Therapist
A nutritional therapist takes a detailed case history, including questions on all your body systems. It is likely that symptoms may be related as - from our point of view - everything is interconnected. You will be given recommendations and supported to make the changes with regular follow-ups to adjust your plan as required. Having accountability is often the hidden factor which leads to greater health and happiness.
As nutritional therapists we:
- Give you the time to talk through all your health problems
- Take a full medical history
- Discuss your food diary and any limitations you have on food or cooking
- Provide a practical dietary plan in line with your aims and health needs
- Suggest specific activities for you e.g. exercise, stress-reduction, sleep support
- Recommend specific supplements, if appropriate
- Recommend tests for blood, stool, urine, saliva or DNA to investigate further
- Meet with you regularly to track your progress and support you through challenges
- Celebrate with you when you reach your goals!
Your goals may be for weight, sleep, stress, flexibility, pain or any other problem.
Nutritional therapy starts with nutrition as the first and simplest type of medicine. The food we put into our bodies influences the quality of every aspect of our health. Food is the powerhouse that helps you function at your best, so we help you give your body the fuel it needs. To complete the picture, we also look at other aspects of your life as these often hold the key to happiness and health.
If weight is an issue we look at it as part of your lifestyle pattern. Nutritional therapists may make diet recommendations, but we are unlikely to put you “on a diet”. In my experience these often work for only for a short time, and we are looking for sustained and healthy lifetime improvement.
Finally, but most importantly, we give you all the time you need to explain your health situation fully. You have a regular follow up schedule and a friendly voice if you have any questions. All these aspects support you to a longer health span, not just a longer life span.
