World Alzheimers Day 21 September part of World Alzheimers Month

Alzheimer’s Disease is a major barrier to living a long and happy life.

When you measure life in terms of years the opportunities to live a long time pain-free have expanded exponentially during the last 20 years at least.

Hip replacements and knee replacements for example have become commonplace and help many to stay mobile much later in life.

A happy life is harder to quantify but most people would agree that it is the ability to know who you are in the world, to have interests and to connect meaningfully with people you love.

Sadly dementia takes away many of those abilities.

So while life may be long for those with alzheimers , it cannot be said to necessarily be happy.  In fact the worst time may be when the person knows they are losing their memory and are distressed by it.  A later stage where they are less aware of what they can’t remember appears less traumatic for them and those around them.

Wonderful work is done by the Alzheimers Society and other organisations and a wealth of information is available.

A thought for World Alzheimers Day

It is not a disease that occurs only in old age.  Even if it appears during later years, the seeds may have been planted much earlier.  Even during your thirties you set the stage for events to come.

The answer is to have a healthy lifestyle that starts with eating the right foods but includes many other aspects.

If you worry that you might get dementia later now is the perfect time to look at your lifestyle. Together we can help you establish the patterns to help prevent alzheimers.
